Rory Bremner offers food for thought at Westonbirt Heads' Lunch

Senior Head's Blog

Comedian Rory Bremner offered us real food for thought at the Westonbirt Heads' Lunch yesterday. Focusing a conversation around supporting students with ADHD, seamlessly switching between hilarious impressions and offering an insight into his own diagnosis; acknowledging that channelling his “superpower” has undoubtedly contributed to his hugely successful stand up career:

"A brain that allows you to blurt out the thing that everyone else is thinking, but has filtered out before saying, comes in quite handy as a comedian!"

As a patron of the ADHD Foundation, however, Rory knows that there are many young people less fortunate in coping with their diagnosis. Often labelled “naughty” by adults or deemed “irritating and immature” by peers, the desperate need for acceptance can so often lead to further isolation. Sharing startling statistics for the number of young offenders and those in the prison system who are diagnosed with ADHD, Rory highlighted the need for understanding the young people whose brains are simply “wired differently”.

Rory emphasised the great work of the ADHD Foundationfrom which we can all gain useful insight or inspiring inset. As teachers, he urged us to continue the work we do daily in schools, supporting children with a wide range of needs that should not define them, but instead enable them to find their own superpowers.
