Westonbirt Prep School are celebrating a double national success in the swimming pool. The Gloucestershire school took two teams to the IAPS National Swimming Finals, held at the impressive London Aquatic Centre in June. Inspired by the Olympic spirit that will forever be associated with the venue and lead by former Olympian and Head of Swimming Robin Francis, the Year 5 and 6 relay teams travelled with high hopes.
The prestigious event began with 4600 competitors from 285 schools entering the qualifying galas. The 8x25m relays pitted the Westonbirt teams against others of a similar size across the country; the children acquitted themselves admirably. The boys secured a hard-earned silver medal and the girls performed incredibly to win the gold by seconds.
Headmaster Sean Price said of the day, ‘It was a wonderful experience for all involved to perform at such an iconic venue in front of thousands of supporters. To achieve such success was a deserved reward for the tremendous hard work from staff and children throughout this year and for most of the team, for several years prior to this.’
Swim Captain Ischia stated ‘We were all so excited just to swim in the Olympic pool. I have been swimming in school since Nursery and this made it all worth the effort- I will never forget the day!’
