This week we received the brilliant news that three wells sponsored by Westonbirt are now up and running in Sierra Leone. The work was undertaken by a charity that we have been working with for several years, Rory’s Well.
Rory’s Well is a charity that was set up in memory of Rory Evans, who was tragically killed in a car accident just after his 18th birthday. The charity initially focused on providing clean water for the people of Sierra Leone but has since broadened their work to help communities with education and infrastructure.
In February 2018, seven Westonbirt students and two members of staff travelled to Sierra Leone to work alongside Rory’s Well. Following their trip, the students decided to try and raise money to help build and restore wells in the villages that they visited. They organised a series of fundraising events including a charity ball and cake sales, and combined with a ‘Just Giving’ page; they managed to raise over £1600. The three wells we are sponsoring will help to provide clean and safe drinking water to over 1500 villagers in the Pujehun district.
It is fantastic to be able to support a local charity working in one of the poorest parts of the world. Thank you to everyone who got involved in all of our fundraising efforts! We have another group heading to Sierra Leone next year to continue the great work we have started with Rory’s Well.
